One of the absolute best books on politics (and human society) out there. Completely explains political economy in simple yet stunning fashion. No better elucidation of the principle of state capacity (and how it explains democracy, or lack thereof) that I have come across.

Nothing particularly striking or new here, but nevertheless a relatively comprehensive look at democratization and de-democratization. Light on the science though, and somewhat anecdotal at times.
