Merline Lovelace's The Horse Soldier was my 1st book by her. It was a difficult book to follow, but glad I finished it. General Andrew Garrett thought his ears were deceiving him as the lady with blue-black hair, standing near the wagon train, spoke her peace. Somewhere between a 3 and a 4 star. It was entertaining, but there were a couple of things that bugged a bit. All in all it was a good Kindle owners Prime pick for October. I don't read a lot of historicals set in that time and place (1860's Great Plains after war), so it was interesting to me. I believe there are a couple of followup novels with one following the young daughter of this book. I'll be reading those in the future.

Would have rated it a 5 but I didn't like the rape/murder scene and the reappearance of the husband which only seemed to muck things up for about 5 minutes until he died (for the 2nd time). This book started out great, the middle was good/interesting but the end took a detour I didn't care for. I enjoyed the history aspect. You don't see many books set in this time period in the US.

I like historical romance and it kept me interested. Bit more history and plot than romance and sex, but I enjoyed it for what it was.
