Prose can be a tad hysterical in places for modern readers, but Hervey is a much smarter writer than he first comes across as, and draws a deliciously complex tale. Highly recommended for Vietnam literature scholars, 20th c. Americanists looking at the Asia Pacific region, and/or literature people doing comparative global south studies between SE Asia and the US south.
