Rootless by Chris Howard, the first book in the planned Rootless trilogy, published by in November 2012, was a huge hit with readers worldwide. It was the story of a 17-year-old tree builder, Banyan, who has been on his own since the disappearance of his father under mysterious circumstances. Rootless was a mishmash of young adult, dystopian, adventure, science fiction, post-apocalyptic fantasy and a whole gamut of other genres rolled into one. Like its genre-bending nature, the book was a wild [...]

Wow, the creepy factor went through the roof in this second installment. Not that Rootless was for the weak-hearted, but still The Rift was every bit as good, if not better than Rootless. It moves fast, there are numerous twists and turns that don't fail to surprise, and it ends with a solid cliffhanger. I didn't have to reread Rootless prior to delving into this, and I think that is the testament of a well written novel ( if after the first five pages you immediately recollect an entire set of [...]

Rift picks up where Rootless left off. We're on the boat, headed back with the only surviving trees.Banyan continues to fight for his trees. If you've read Rootless, there is a deeper, more sinister reason why Banyan is attached to the trees. If you haven't read Rootless, you should before reading Rift. A lot isn't going to make sense in Rift unless you know the first part of the story. The world isn't what Banyan thought it was when he began his journey in Rootless. In Rift, we see just what is [...]

Oh my gosh, I thought Rootless was crazy but Chris Howard was just getting started. The characters are so complex, the tension is so thick and every twist and turn gave me whiplash! I'm also considering suing for emotional distress because Howard is very good at breaking hearts. If you liked Rootless you'll love The Rift. Howard takes the action, the intensity and the emotion and just amps it up times ten. As we all know people will die but so many preconceptions you had about The Rift, Gentech, [...]

Excellent read! It gets a little slower and repetitive at some parts, but it picks right back up again immediately after every time. Great characters, unique and addicting story, with some extreme tension and heartbreak. Loved it and can't wait for book 3!
