A book that keeps you reading is always a good book. But what is a good Western, really? I am no authority on the genre, Westerns are not really my thing, but to me it's: a sprawling sense of scope, the use of era vernacular, gunfights, history-challenging storytelling, gunfights, gunfights, horses and gunfights, in that order, precisely. GOSPEL OF THE BULLET hits all the right notes in that regard, yet I felt like it was a little bit more than a Western. I usually don't like them all that much.S [...]

I don't read a lot of westerns, but I do read as much Chris Leek as I can. Fans of either will be satisfied here, Leek is in top form in this tale of a gunfighter and the orphaned daughter of one of his friends. Plenty of the action, quickly well drawn characters, and sharp dialogue, that make his crime stories so effective is present here, while retaining the unique flavor of a western. The only minor complaint may be it does not go outside the standard western tropes we have all seen in the mo [...]

What a great novella! I don't read much westerns but this is kinda making me want to pick up some. I definitely want this to be adapted to graphic novel or comic format. It is somewhat similar to the comic Pretty Deadly and I thought about that story throughout reading this book. Mitch McCann and Justice were two very great characters and as excited as I was to read a short book for once I could have easily read a book with them double this size. Who knows maybe we will get a sequel???

I feel guilty for not finishing this book, but I just can't. I didn't enjoy any aspect of it. The prose is over-written and bounces back and forth between a southern dialect and modern talk, occasionally slipping into some unidentifiable style. The plot doesn't develop enough for me to even care what's happening. The exposition isn't good and there's too much of it. The editing is poor also. Gospel of the Bullet would have benefited from some major revisions and a strict editor.

I won this as part of a First Reads contest. I will admit that I'm not generally a connoisseur of western novels (unless it's of the weird West) but Gospel of the Bullet was one that caught my eye early, and I'm glad it did. Mr. Leek tells a mighty fine tale, albeit one which needs a bit of polishing grammatically. Otherwise, I really enjoyed my romp through the Old West. It's a short read, but it's one you'll love.

Have always loved a western and what more can I say? Leek has twisted us up a good one here. Would like to see more in this line

Another super fast read from One Eye Press in their Singles series. Chris Leek is a good author. A not so standard western novella.

Overall this was a solid piece, I was not completely happy with the ending but I can understand why the author finished it up that way. If this ends up being a series I would likely read the sequel.
