Only with Blood provides readers with an intense look at Ireland during World War II. Rather than focusing on Ireland’s involvement in the war overall, this story focuses on the insurgent activities of the IRA during that time. I will be honest and admit that I didn’t read this book in its entirety. I very nearly didn’t finish it at all, but after making it to about the halfway point, I decided to skim the rest to at least get an idea of how things ended for the characters. There are certa [...]

Only with Blood is a novel about Ireland in the 1940's. There is a lot of history interweaved into this fictional story and I learned some things about Ireland that I didn't know prior to reading this book. It touches on the struggle that Ireland faced during the Second World War between the Irish and the British. This was the main thing that attracted me to this book. I have always been interested in Ireland and I was anxious to read a novel rich in the history of this country.I found the chara [...]

Honestly, it's hard to really know what to say about Only with Blood. For the first 3/4 of the novel, I struggled to get through it. I think part of this is because I know virtually no Irish history, so the names and events, which I'm sure would have been significant to readers in Ireland or the United Kingdom, meant nothing to me. So much of the story surrounding Donal, the man who falls for Caitlin, centers on the IRA, and this plot line in particular didn't keep my attention. While no one in O [...]

This is a story set in 1940's Ireland. Jack Flynn, a farmer dying of tuberculosis, decides he needs to get married so that his farm can go to his future children. He meets a matchmaker and in turn finds a family with a teenage daughter named Caitlin Spillane. Caitlin's father Mick knows Jack is sick and that his daughter aspires to continue her education, but is enticed by the amount of money Jack is offering for his daughter's hand in marriage. Mick chooses the money over his daughter's happine [...]

The subtitle of Therese Down’s debut novel, Only with Blood, is A Novel of Ireland, and that is exactly what you get. Billed as historical fiction, I would add that this is literary fiction with a voice as unique as an Irish brogue. Beautifully written, though stark and sometimes depressing, Only with Blood is exceptional. It is, however, not what I would categorize as Christian fiction.Only with Blood traces the stories of three main characters: Jack Flynn a 40+ year old farmer finally thinki [...]

I received this book from Kregel Publications for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.Book Description: When dying Jack Flynn decides he needs a bride so that he can father a son, his young wife Caitlin proves far more than he intended to buy Jack Flynn, strong and aggressive but slowly dying of tuberculosis on his farm in Tipperary in the Republic of Ireland, decides to acquire―purchase―a young wife who can bear him sons to inherit [...]

This book was very interesting. I have read a few books about Ireland's history but none about the IRA. I have to admit though, parts of it were slow for me, but the other parts were excellent and more than made up for it. This story has so many stories within it at times I compared it to a spider web tangling every which way and then finally coming together beautifully to make this intricate masterpiece! I kept thinking "Why are we going in this direction?" only to later realize "Oh, that's why [...]

ONLY WITH BLOOD was not my cup of tea. Steep in the history of Ireland in the 40s and the IRA, I had a hard time finishing the book, only doing so because I received the book in exchange for a review. Other than the fact that a good chunk of the story was dedicated to information regarding the IRA, my dislike for the main characters made it difficult for me to draw any attachment to them. Jack Flynn is portrayed as the villain, but in the end, he is the only one with any heart. I didn’t like t [...]

This book gives us a deep look into life in Ireland during the Second World War, where life is hard, rationing like the rest of the world, but with also in fighting between the IRA and Britton. There is also a look inside the home of one of the farmers and his family, and the ghastly road to money he took when he sells his youngest daughter to man that is his age. Now this girl Caitlin is interested in learning and wants to go to the University, which in this peasant community, is scoffed at. Wat [...]

I received this book as part of a FirstReads giveaway. Only with Blood is a book about a fiercely intelligent girl sold into marriage by her father to a man twice her age. There is of course the dashing IRA agent who seeks to rescue her from her forced marriage and make her his own. But this book is not the predictable romance I was expecting, and I'm very greatful. The heroine is intelligent, and headstrong and generally does not look to others to save her. The older man who buys her is not por [...]

This novel takes us to WW II Ireland, a dark time. There is much anger and hatred. It is a time when a greedy father would "sell" his daughter to marry a much old man. It is a time when an intelligent young woman would have to submit to her father's plans rather than attend university, her dream. It is a time when other angry men want to harm those colluding with the British.I did not like the style of this novel. There are many flashbacks and they do not reveal the history of the characters in [...]

Set in the 1940s in Ireland, this novel is an excellent read on several levels. First, the characters are interesting; I found myself caring about them deeply. Caitlin finds herself in an impossible situation. I could feel her despair and sympathize with her as she goes through denial, anger, and a reluctant acceptance. I also came to understand Donal's desires that drove him to do what he did, even if I didn't always agree. The end is not what I expected at all but is very appropriate. Secondly [...]

The time of "The Troubles" was devastating, for all. When I first read about this time, I could only think of how bad people were to be willing to kill others. I forgot that they were all PEOPLE and there are two sides to every story.Only With Blood pulled me into to a time when a man needed to have a heir to pass their property on to. Jack Flynn, dying with tuberculosis has decided to purchase Caitlin Spillane, a 17 year old who wanted to go to university.Along comes Donal Kelly, with ties to t [...]

I was surprised with how quickly this book grabbed my attention. Once started, I could hardly set it down I was so captivated! The story is is set in Ireland in 1943 and is told through three alternating perspectives: Jack - an old farmer who decides he must get married so someone can inherit the farm, Donal - an IRA agent who teaches math and runs a farm, and Caitlin - a gorgeous beauty who dreams of winning a scholarship so she can attend university. Once these three paths cross nothing will e [...]

This was a very well written novel about Ireland in the 40s. There are two basic story lines - the struggle between the Irish and the British and the bloodshed that was going on and the story of Caitlin, a young farmer's daughter who wants to go to university and make a better life for herself. Caitlin is sold in marriage to a man more than twice her age and much of the story is about her resentment over losing her independence. This was an excellent novel on many levels - historical facts about [...]

At first I was a bit of worried about this book because of the cover and the blurb indicated a romantic novel and I'm not really a big fun of it. Although in the centre of the story setting in the WWII era Ireland are love and a tragic marriage, it's much better than just an average romance. In the background are the neutral Ireland and the anti-English actions of the IRA. Interesting fates, good characters, maybe sometimes it was just a bit too slow.
