Fast-paced and entertaining epidemiological thriller set aboard a small luxury cruise ship sailing from Australia to ports in southeast Asia through the Indian Ocean and on to South Africa. Crewmen are dying from blood poisoning at an alarming rate and the ship's only physician, Dr. Noah Ferguson, is petrified that there is some type of lethal microbe somewhere on the cruise liner. Fortunately, there is a passenger on board who might have the expertise to find the point source -- once they figur [...]

The true test of plunging into a series on book four is how well you can dive into it without feeling like a complete outsider. I leapt into Beneath the Wake and didn’t feel the least bit out of the loop. As far as the characters were concerned, I got to know them fairly quickly. Interestingly enough, what made me choose this book was Dr. Ross Pennie’s brief bio.“As a specialist in infectious diseases worldwide, Dr. Ross Pennie has treated multifarious patients battling every germ imaginab [...]

It is official, I am a Dr. Zol Szabo fan! I received Beneath the Wake from ECW press, who kindly chose me to write a review before the May release as part of their Shelf Monkey program.I will admit to being quite skeptical of this title when I requested it, but within the first few lines, I became a fan of this author and series. I honestly, could not put this book down. When I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it. Within the first three volumes of this brilliantly woven series, the Doc [...]

ayearofbooksblog/2017/10/Have you ever thought about what happens when people die on a cruise ship? Would you have considered that cruise ships are equipped with morgues? Would you think that there is the possibility of a burial at sea? Death on a cruise ship is a sad reality and something that must be dealt with miles away from land, in warm climates where it is essential to keep bodies refrigerated until reaching port.Ross Pennie has introduced the reader to a whole other side of cruising in h [...]

I do not normally read mysteries but I started the Szabo series in 2013 at the recommendation of a friend and found the medical/scientific setting interesting .The author's story telling propelled me through each of the first 3 book .As soon as a new one came out I would read it.This new book was no exception.I pre-ordered it for my Kindle last December and when it came out last week I immediately started to read it. As luck would have it,I was traveling on a small luxury cruise ship at the time [...]

I thought this was the best Zol Szabo mystery yet. It's not your typical murder mystery but, as in the others, there is an infection which must be tracked down before more people die. This one occurrs on a cruise ship, so facilities were quite limited. Besides the hunting down of the cause of the infection, I enjoyed the foreign settings (the ports they visited) and the description of cruise life.

I still enjoyed the intrigue and characters throughout but found some of this a bit hoaky. Not as good as his third but still quite fun to read. I received this as a giveaway from so if not for that, I wouldn't have discovered this series! Love it and look forward to the next one, hopefully!

Interesting book and mystery, written by a Canadian medical scientist, exploring a number of broad global topics, as well as ethical and lethal issues, along with ingenuity to explore a serious infectious outbreak with minimal resources. Will make one look at the cruise industry and the desirability of taking a cruise differently.

I'm not a mystery reader but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Travel writing is one of my preferred genres and, consequently, I loved the details of the various ports of call. I think the author really captured the mood and flavor of the heat, the crowds and the chaos of SE Asia.

This is was an interesting read. I received this book for free when I was selected as a giveaway winner. First of all, this was my first experience with a medical mystery. Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was genuinely intrigued about the situation throughout the entire book and I felt the characters were interesting enough to keep my attention. I thought the ending fell flat as I read the last chapter, but Pennie tricked me at the last second and wowed me one more time. If y [...]

4 StarsZol Szabo and his co-worker, Natasha Sharma, are on a six week cruise off of Australia. Along with them are Zol’s son, Max, and his friend, Travis. The ship’s doctor begins to be concerned about a possible outbreak of an unknown pathogen aboard the ship. He enlists Zol and Natasha’s help. Under rather primitive conditions, by laboratory standards at any rate, they perform some tests on the remains of the victims. Coming up with an unknown pathogen, they need to get to a real lab to [...]
