This captivating novel centers around Michaela, a young woman grappling with life as best as she can while living with an anxiety disorder. Having worked on several national mental health initiatives, I found the novel incredibly sensitive and responsive to the issues and needs people living with mental health disorders, and specifically anxiety disorders, encounter. Nicole’s debut book is wonderfully sincere and thoughtful; one can tell and appreciate the level of research it took to write. T [...]

This novel is a fascinating portrayal of a young woman's experience overcoming intense anxiety. The protagonist experiences an outwardly subtle but inwardly dramatic transformation over the course of the book that offers hope to those struggling with mental illness. The descriptions of the protagonist's interior monologue are riveting and vividly relate the discomfort of experiencing intrusive anxious thoughts. The protagonist reminded me a bit of the protagonists in Curtis Sittenfeld's Prep and [...]

This is an interesting novel containing a psychological study of a sophisticated and over-achieving young woman. Michaela – the main character – is living through serious internal issues and struggles which make her social, personal, and professional aspects of life rather difficult due to overwhelming anxiety problems. The author has an original style which I liked: the narrative is terse, intense and free-flowing which corresponds very well to the subject of the book.It is a good read and [...]

Permission to Read? . . . Absolutely. The writing is technically sound, and you can tell it's a very personal story to the author. It's not really my preferred genre, but I still found it interesting. It gives you a real glimpse behind the curtain into the mind of someone struggling with mental issues.

Loved it!!I was lucky to learn about Permission to Bloom from my boyfriend who went to school with Nicole. Found the book to be a beautiful, unique mix of vulnerable and gripping. I started the book before bed (as per usual), but at 4 am vivid dreams of Michaela's inner struggles jolted me awake, and I couldn't help but finish the book by the late morning. My thoughts still keep coming back to the story, weeks later. Congratulations Nicole! You created something really special!
