Spectacular is the word! Even without much knowledge about formal classical music, I could read layers of meaning and depth through Thi.Ja's amazing portrayal and narration in this novel. It flows smoothly like the river Cauvery of yore. All characters were very memorable, the incidents and feelings very believable, the net result very wonderful.

A real take on lust. A normal Tamil saying goes like this: The lust remains just for thirty days. But in this novel Janakiraman questions that. Lust can remain even for years.

No spoilers.I read this book in 90's during my college days. It took me sometime (first 200 pages read) to get used to the period mentioned in this book (1930/1940). Next 400 pages I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. In fact when it was near to end, I wanted this book as a never ending one. It's a wonderful read. And no "they lived happily ever after" ending :). It just covers a period of life incidents of the main characters.Highly recommended.Regards,Mahesh kumar

What to say?Loved it. Okay. The story is a very simple one.A boy who is who come to study in collage away from home, a son of a singer, a passionate youngster , and he does with his life.It all becomes more sensible ,complicated and difficult when he meets his past love and passion-a past that he did dare to become involved with. There is no nothingness in this story. It is a youthful, well handled, realistic story of young boy who is struggling between his passion, love, boyish feelings and society [...]

I liked the way Thi.Jaa described Kumbakonam. I felt the same way when I visited Kumbakonam, Swamimalai and Mayuram the first time. I did watch the movie based on this novel. I liked the novel better.I have read few books of tamil authors other than Sujatha/Lakshmi. Janakiraman brings the 50s and 60s neatly, I believe.

Well written book. One of the best books I have ever read. This book portrays the period very well.Yamuna characters’ wittiness in conversation will lure the reader.I like the way it ended happily.

Reading this book after a gap of 7 years helped me appreciate the finer details which I had missed out the first time for the want of 'age'. The landscape and soundscape of Tanjore-Kumbakonam of the yore will continue to visit me in my dreams for some weeks to come.
