This is a fascinating story about the last known living tortoise from Pinta island in the Galapagos islands. It's a true story and explains how human actions changed the ecology of the islands by introducing non-native animals. This tale is just another example of how we affect our world in negative ways, but it also offers some hope that we can make changes that will preserve endangered species. The narrative was engaging and informative without being overwhelming or boring and the illustration [...]

Lonesome George, the Giant Tortoise is a 30 page book with a small paragraph on each page. The main character of the book is George, a male tortoise on Pinta Island in the Galapagos, who cannot find a mate. This book has double page illustrations that are some form of colored pencil. The detail of the illustration eloquently elaborate on the detail of the text regarding the environment around George and George himself. The book does a great job of incorporating very interesting facts about torto [...]

Personal Reaction- I loved this book! The tortoise perseveres through the distinction of his type of tortoise. Tells a great story of a different setting (not the United States) and also a good story on how you can overcome anything.Purposes: This could be for students 3rd-4th grade. George is a lonesome tortoise who is alone on an island where he is the last of his kind. The story gives good illustrations of the Galapagos Islands which I'm sure many students have not been to. The vocabulary is [...]

This is about the last Pinci Saddleback Turtle, Lonesome George. It was written in 2003 though, so it's got a couple glaring errors that you're bound to notice. The big one is, of course, that Lonesome George has passed away since this was written. This book states that there is hope to find him a mate and that he has another 90 years to live. In truth, he passed away just 9 years after this was published. If you'd like another, more up-to-date book on Lonesome George, try Galapagos George by Je [...]

This is a wonderful yet sad true tale of the last Pinta tortoise from the Galapagos Island. This beautifully illustrated read is perfect to share with students who are being introduced to terms such as: native and invasive species, conservation, evolution, and natural selection. Or just to lay a foundation for those words that will come in later years of education. More than anything this story really shows the impact that human actions have on the environment immediately and long term. Readers [...]

The story of George, the last known Pinta Island tortoise. The paintings are soft and give a sense of the expanse of the Galapagos landscape. The text gives young readers a clear picture of the inadvertent damage introduced species (goats) can do, and what it means to be the lonely last of your kind. A good starting point for conversations about the balance of nature and human impact.
