An interweaving of essays and personal experiences written by an American couple about the arab countries they have visited and studied throughout their lives. Easy to read. Lucid. Good span of time to show changes.I think this is an excellent book to help expose an American to this part of the world and thereby hopefully broaden their world view.

My favorite part of this book is when Elizabeth (a seasoned anthropologist and scholar) is introduced to Arab discontents of Western cultural hegemony. Overall an enjoyable read, and good portrayal of the complex interactions between Western "observers" and Arab individuals.

Firsthand experiences in the world's most volatile region from an anthropological perspective. Light on theory, heavy on empirical observation.
