“A Kiss Before You Leave Me” cast a spell over me from the opening words. It was so strange and unexpected to be drawn into a place and time so smoothly, introduced to characters who were both apathetic and intense. I loved the introspective air of the narrative, the reflective nature of the thoughts and ideas presented as the narrator invites you to see the world from their omniscient view. There were times when I wanted to just read the story, the actions and conversations taking place, wi [...]

Original review at: bit/nve699The question of identity is one that cannot be answered in isolation. As a social creature, the way we define ourselves is often heavily influenced by the way we view others and the reverse. This tangled web of relationships and identity forms the heart of James Hulbert’s literary character study, A Kiss Before You Leave Me.The novel follows the flow of interactions between translator Miranda Kinkaid, her ex-husband stock-broker Vince, and her new beau, a lawyer. A Kiss Before You Leave Me is literary fiction (one of those “you know it when you see it” things) with the plot of a suspense novel. The characters are different from the norm enough that guessing their secrets and how it will all work out is virtually impossible. How I felt about different characters kept changing as the story progressed with some significant surprises down the finishing stretch. One item I noted was what seemed like a change in the point of view from one book (major secti [...]

One's first impression is that, in its detail, "A Kiss." is consummately crafted as a Faberge egg. There's not a word out of place, and many passages could comfortably stand by themselves as prose poems. At the same time, from the beginning--which refers to a "key" moment which comes much later--one realizes that "A Kiss." is architectural in the sense that each detail is a carefully positioned part of a mystery, for like a Faberge egg the novel is made to beautifully display the fact that it co [...]

I read A KISS when it first launched. The characters are quite fascinating. I don't think most readers appreciate how difficult it is for writers to create characters that live and breathe on the page. These characters certainly do. The plot and psychological drama really sweep you in. Descriptions are very visual and that's something I need as a reader. Excellent!

This is a beautifully written literary novel. It looks on the surface to be a romance but things aren't always as they seem. If you like well written prose and a good story with characters you care about, this is the book for you. I hope they make a movie of it. I've read it once and am reading it a second time. Savoring
